If canon, canon point: Final Hour, before the last battle.
PB: n/a
Setting Background:
History: Tadah.
Personality: Before the death of her fiance, Rei was a loud, outgoing young woman. She was blunt, to the point of being cruel (as interpreted in one of the notes she makes in game that state the her fiance was her opposite in every way, because he was quiet and kind), with a large, true love for Yuu. She enjoyed her work, and working with people; photography was her life, and she was becoming very well-known in her own right. But after, in her mind, causing his death, Rei starts to withdraw. Her smile's faded, her ventures outside ceased almost completely as she shut herself off into a deep depression. If it wasn't for Miku's help, it's likely she would have killed herself.
(It should also be noted that while she wants to die and hates herself for surviving, she's staying alive to end the curse for Miku's sake. She wants to see Yuu one more time and go with him, but won't be taking matters into her own hands, so to speak, any time soon.)
Rei's go-to response to things that happen to her is to avoid it. She avoids confiding in Miku, she avoids putting the boxes of Yuu's things away, of dealing with his death. She internalizes everything in the beginning, only starting to open up to Miku when she realizes they're both cursed and that not working together would be foolish. Typically when asked what's wrong or if she's okay, Rei lies and brushes it off, not wanting others to worry about her, but through working with Miku to get through the curse, Rei's started to open up a little more to people.
Miku is extremely important to Rei. Miku came to live with them after losing her brother, being brought into the household by Yuu, and establishing a close relationship with Rei as her best friend and assistant. After Yuu dies, Miku is the one who takes care of everything in the house, from chores, to Rei's research, to making sure Rei gets out of bed, eats properly, and gets to her appointments. When Miku succumbs to her wish to see her brother, Rei gives chase, calling desperately for Miku to come back with a "Don't go! You were always smiling, you were always strong than I was! Without you, I... Miku, don't go! Don't leave me all alone!" Miku was all Rei had, and to see someone who Rei thought of as a much stronger person than herself give in was a harsh blow. In addition to that, seeing that her friend was also cursed in the first place, living on and having a desire to break the curse was a way for Rei to give back for everything Miku did for her. She couldn't possibly die and leave Miku to her fate too after everything they've been through.
Rei throws herself into work when things get bad, or when she's stressed. She makes mention in the game that Miku is constantly asking her to not work so hard, or to not take on as many projects as she's been doing, but Rei remarks that she "prefers it this way," as being busy means her mind is fully focused on the task(s) at hand, so she doesn't have to think about the things that are bothering her. It can be taken from this that she handles negative emotions poorly, preferring to throw herself into other things and focusing on them. While it's implied that Rei turned away from people and things for the first month or so after Yuu's death, and while still stated that she rarely leaves the house even now, the game does say that she's begun taking work to appease Miku's urges. It's also said that she doesn't work with people anymore despite having used to work for fashion magazines and models, she's gone freelance.
When backed into a corner, Rei seems to go in two directions depending on her mood and the circumstances. Either avoidance as stated earlier, or a determination to see things through. After Miku fell into a coma because of the curse, Yuu's old friend Kei visited to try and help them, as he too had been cursed. He ends up dying and Rei reacts with a numb sort of grief-- that is, upset, but so exhausted that she barely reacts. Instead of giving up under the hopelessness of the situation, she appears more determined than ever to confront Reika and try to see to the end of the curse.
For the most part though, Rei is rather calm and practical, facing harrowing situations with a set jaw and insatiable curiosity. She only gets into this mess in the first place because she sees what she thinks is Yuu standing around a corner and chases after him, after all. She watches, researches, takes notes, and generally all with a quietly curious air.
Canon Powers: A strong sixth sense, able to detect, see and communicate with spirits. She’s able to hear voices and whispers that can lead her towards important places or people. Touching people or objects can get her glimpses of their pasts or the histories surrounding them, up to and including experiencing the moment of their deaths.
The psychometry isn't dependent on spirits (sorry for the ambiguous wording!). IF she touches people, living or dead, she can catch glimpses of their pasts or, if they're dead, how they died.
Separately from that, touching objects can give her visions of things related to the object-- For example, if she touches a key she may see a vision of someone walking down a hallway and using the key on a door, so she'll have an idea of what door it's used on. Or if she touches an object important to someone, she might get a series of quick glimpses of memories surrounding the object and the feelings put into it.
Freebie Powers: In canon, the tattoo is invisible against Rei's skin (potentially supernatural beings are welcome to see it though), only becoming visible when a ghost touches her. Presumably this extends to most if not all supernatural creatures touching her, where the tattoo might become visible for a short time. I'd like for this to be a thing that happens in the game too, if possible? It doesn't do anything, it just looks neat so I think it'd fall under cosmetic differences.
Power Selection: Native Superpowers.
Game Powers: Rei's ability to see spirits isn't really anything game-breaking and sh can't really do anything with it--She can't control the spirits or anything, she can just interact with them. Likewise being able to see their pasts, while incredibly useful, has some backlash on Rei as well in that she can feel what they went through. For example, when seeing someone's death, she feels the death too and it can be incredibly painful. Rei also doesn't have complete control over these abilities; while she can try to get it to work, it's not a 100% sure thing and therefore completely open to the potential to fail.
Non-Powered Abilities: As Rei is a very talented photographer, she has a very steady hand in order to not blur her photos. Along with this is the fact she's quite accomplished with taking quick, precise photos on the fly. Rei also learns very quickly and adapts quickly, as indicated in the game by how fast she got used to the creepy mansion and is able to remember the details of the rooms and where they're located in the manor. She's also got talent in drawing/sketching.
Rei is also highly organized. She carried a bag with her that has everything in its' place, including a divided notebook that has a place for files she finds, photographs, scraps, etc. Along with this she takes very detailed notes on things she finds and always writes down her observations, just in case she has to go back over them to try and discover something new in regards to a situation.
Setting/Suitability: While this would be rather outside of Rei's usual norm, she's used to being dropped into strange situations and having to adapt on the fly. Granted it's in more of a survival horror context, but those skills still translate over well. She's observant and practical, cool and level-headed in the face of danger, and generally rather grounded person. And while she may be more used to delegating tasks rather than cooperating, it's an important skill for her to learn, as well as forcing her to interact with larger groups of people again.
SAMPLES
Prose Sample: "Is this a joke...?" Rei mutters to herself, watching the angry little crowd with a severely unimpressed expression on her face. Who got burned at the stake anymore? For that matter, who was accused of being a witch?! They even had pitchforks. How cliche could one get? The root of the trouble lied in the fact that her drawings were a little too realistic. Whatever age of art this place was in, it didn't include the level of detail Rei was used to working in, nor the depth or, well, anything that made it look so real. Much like how cameras were accused of taking the souls of those captured in their lenses, Rei's drawings were getting fingers pointed at them--and her--with accusations of witchcraft and stealing souls.
"Look, if you give me the time, I'll show you. It's not stealing souls or anything like that. It's just a picture." Rei tried not to sigh at the shifting bodies and skeptical side-eyes exchanged along the crowd as she held out her hand. "Give me your own tools for it, if you don't believe me. I'll draw something right here to show you. I'll even show you how to do it yourself." It would be a huge waste of her time, but probably better than letting them kill her. Hopefully, though, someone else would come along soon to help her out of this, since this was her only solution for the moment. And if it didn't work... Well. She figured she could cross that bridge if she got to it. For now, however, though her eyes continually scanned for someone who looked like they were as 'otherworldly' as herself with the goal of reaching out for further help, she'd put up with this.
Surely they could be reasoned with, right? And if they saw they could do it themselves, hopefully they could see how relatively harmless it truly was.
Her gaze turned back to the little crowd. "...Well? You only get one chance at this. Are you really willing to risk killing someone innocent without testing it all first?"
Network Sample: [Reis' lips remain pursed for a long, long moment. She's really not sure what to say or where to even begin. No lying or being insincere? She's not sure that would be a problem, since she's not sure what to even lie about. She doesn't feel particularly compelled to lie to children or treat them like they don't understand things in the first place, but...]
I don't know what to say. It's not like it's been easy the past few months--Even before coming to this place.
[She falls silent again, just staring at the child her. It's a little unsettling to see, but Rei supposes she's seen worse things. Being shaken by this sees rather silly.]
It was terrifying. Your life will be in danger. You'll meet the love of your life and lose him because of your own stupidity. [Rei falls silent abruptly again, feeling like her throat is constricting and burning as the emotional wounds are suddenly rubbed raw again.]
...But, it's not like ti's all lost. You'll learn that too... That you're a lot stronger than you first thought. That you can survive, even if you might not want to. And.... You know you'll see him again, so...
[She trails off, not sure what else to say.] So. Don't give up just yet. You'll have people you'll want to save, people you want to see live...and you may be the only thing making sure they do.
Additional info: Would it be possible for Rei to bring her notebook with her? It doesn't have any special powers or anything like that, it's just all her thoughts and research notes over the course of the game.
