Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Rei Kurosawa
◎ Character's Canon: Fatal Frame III: The Tormented
◎ Character's Age: 23
◎ Canon Point: Final Hour, before the last battle.
◎ Background/History: Thank you wiki
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Rei has a very strong sixth sense, able to detect and see ghosts and speak openly with them. She’s able to hear voices and whispers that can lead her towards important places or people.
◎ Personality: Before the death of her fiance, Rei was a loud, outgoing young woman. She was blunt, to the point of being cruel (as interpreted in one of the notes she makes in game that state the her fiance was her opposite in every way, because he was quiet and kind), with a large, true love for Yuu.
She enjoyed her work, and working with people; photography was her life, and she was becoming very well-known in her own right. But after, in her mind, causing his death, Rei starts to withdraw. Her smiles faded, her ventures outside ceased almost completely as she shut herself off into a deep depression. If it wasn't for Miku's help, it's likely she would have killed herself.
At the start of the game she's finally taking on assignments again, at the gentle insistence of Miku, but obviously isn't enjoying it. She'd started to see photography as a chore, something she had to do for money rather than something she does because she likes it; and the fact that she's stopped taking pictures of people. Her assignments revolved around taking pictures of landscapes and architecture.
When she speaks, she constantly sounds bored, or tired, and regards everything with a dry indifference.
And when she took that picture of Yuu's ghost in the manor, everything changed. With the curse spreading, Miku in a coma and the fate of them both resting solely on her shoulders, Rei is stressed to the max, anxious, and very, very tired. She's only awake for maybe an hour at a time before she's slipping off to sleep do battle with the ghosts in the manor, and because of this her temper is stretched thin. She's really just one bad move away from a mental breakdown and curling up in a corner to do a nice, purging sob.
It should also be noted that while she wants to die and hates herself for surviving, she's staying alive to end the curse for Miku's sake. She wants to see Yuu one more time and go with him, but won't be taking matters into her own hands, so to speak, any time soon.
Rei's go-to response to things that happen to her is to avoid it. She avoids confiding in Miku, she avoids putting the boxes of Yuu's things away, of dealing with his death. She internalizes everything in the beginning, only starting to open up to Miku when she realizes they're both cursed and that not working together would be foolish. Typically when asked what's wrong or if she's okay, Rei lies and brushes it off, not wanting others to worry about her, but through working with Miku to get through the curse, Rei's started to open up a little more to people.
Miku is extremely important to Rei, being the last living person (presumably, as you get no background on any of Rei's family, so it's hard to say if she has a family network to back her up) that Rei has around. Miku came to live with them after losing her brother, being brought into the household by Yuu, and establishing a close relationship with Rei as her best friend and assistant. After Yuu dies, Miku is the one who takes care of everything in the house, from chores, to Rei's research, to making sure Rei gets out of bed, eats properly, and gets to her appointments. When Miku succumbs to her wish to see her brother, Rei gives chase, calling desperately for Miku to come back with a "Don't go! You were always smiling, you were always strong than I was! Without you, I... Miku, don't go! Don't leave me all alone!" Miku was all Rei had, and to see someone who Rei thought of as a much stronger person than herself give in was a harsh blow. In addition to that, seeing that her friend was also cursed in the first place, living on and having a desire to break the curse was a way for Rei to give back for everything Miku did for her. She couldn't possibly die and leave Miku to her fate too after everything they've been through.
This is most evident within the last part of the game after Rei defeats Reika and breaks the curse. She's saved Miku and anyone else from falling victim to the curse, but still confronts Yuu's spirit and asks to go with him to the 'other side,' wanting to die and be with him again. However, just why Rei wants to be with him so badly, aside from loving him very much, is unclear. THere's no background given on their relationship before Yuu died, and nothing talking about how their life was together, outside of Yuu being gentle and kind, and the fact that the two met while in college. It can be presumed that they were very happy together and very much in love, with Yuu perhaps providing a stable support for Rei, which is is why she feels so lost and unwilling to move on even months after his death.
Rei throws herself into work when things get bad, or when she's stressed or her depression begins to get to her. SHe makes mention in the game that Miku is constantly asking her to not work so hard, or to not take on as many projects as she's been doing, but Rei remarks that she "prefers it this way," as being busy means her mind is fully focused on the task(s) at hand, so she doesn't have to think about the things that are bothering her. It can be taken from this that she handles negative emotions poorly, preferring to throw herself into other things and focusing on them until she can shove the feelings away and pretend they don't exist. While it's implied that Rei turned away from people and things for the first month or so after Yuu's death, and while still stated that she rarely leaves the house even now, the game does say that she's begun taking work to appease Miku's urges. It's also said that she doesn't work with people anymore despite having used to work for fashion magazines and models, she's gone freelance and accepted jobs as a way to ignore the world around her for a little while.
When backed into a corner, Rei seems to go in two directions depending on her mood and the circumstances. Either avoidance as stated earlier, or a determination to see things through. After Miku fell into a coma because of the curse, Yuu's old friend Kei visited to try and help them, as he too had been cursed. He ends up dying (in the one ending; in the other he goes into acoma too like Miku, but either way Rei ultimately ends up alone) and Rei reacts with a numb sort of grief-- that is, upset, but so exhausted that she barely reacts. Instead of giving up under the hopelessness of the situation, she appears more determined than ever to confront Reika and try to see to the end of the curse.
◎ Powers/Abilities: As Rei is a very talented photographer, she has a very steady hand in order to not blur her photos. Along with this is the fact she's quite accomplished with taking quick, precise photos on the fly. Rei also learns very quickly and adapts quickly, as indicated in the game by how fast she got used to the creepy mansion and is able to remember the details of the rooms and where they're located in the manor.
Rei is also highly organized. She carried a bag with her that has everything in its' place, including a divided notebook that has a place for files she finds, photographs, scraps, etc. Along with this she takes very detailed notes on things she finds and always writes down her observations, just in case she has to go back over them to try and discover something new in regards to a situation.
Because of her involvement in the manor, she's gained a heightened sixth sense and sees and interacts with ghosts easily. She has a special move called "flash" where she emits a burst of light to temporarily blind and repel spirits (and probably people). Also because of her dealings with the tattoo curse, anyone or anything supernatural-- or in general just not human-- touching her will make her tattoo appear on her skin.

◎ Third-Person Sample: It was a good thing Rei had long become used to falling asleep one place and waking up in another. Granted, it was usually going back and forth between her bedroom in the waking world and that mansion, or Zeilien, but this was different from all of those.
More comfortable, at least, she had to admit, and adjusting hadn’t taken much time at all. The layout of the city was confusing at first, but one fateful day she'd gone out and walked several routes to places she knew she'd be frequenting often enough and forced herself to memorize the routes. It was something to do on the days she couldn't pile work on herself-- like today, for example.
It was frustrating to run out of projects to do, when dark thoughts could creep in and loom with the threat to consume her if she wasn't careful. There were memories she wished she could burn out of her mind, memories that reared their ugly heads whenever she had too much downtime.
Her shoulder collided with someone else on the sidewalk as she became dimly aware of how her pace had frantically picked up, like she could outrun those thoughts, and they receded some. "I'm sorry." A mumbled apology as she swept past, keeping her mind focused on her goal.
The shop was flashy as everything else around it, but Rei simply regarded it passively as she entered to browse the selection of cameras and other gadgets. They didn't have the same feel to them as the older cameras Rei usually preferred, but they did the job well enough, she supposed. Maybe she could think about moving somewhere else soon, saving up the money and finding a place where she could put in her own darkroom again. A place to do her work, both with photography and whatever side-projects she took up, and--
Rei straightened in a move so abrupt it startled a man browsing the shelf next to her, and, aware of his concerned gaze, he placed the camera back very deliberately and turned away.
What was wrong with her? She was thinking too normally, like this was some place she could make a life, and though she knows objectively, logically, her own thoughts were nothing more than an attempt at making it more bearable here, she couldn't help but feel aggravated and betrayed with her own mind.
There was too much at stake to risk getting complacent. With another deliberate motion, Rei turned on heel and exited the shop, mouth turned down in a sharp frown. There was no time for playing house and making a life for herself, she had to remind herself of that.
◎ Is your character retaining any previous game memories?
Yes, of her time in [Bad username or unknown identity: ”exitvoid”]! For Rei not much about her, personally, has changed, though due to her interactions with someone as relentless as Shinpachi, she’s learned to lighten up a little. Not much, but enough that she’s more willing to go along with schemes she might have just turned and walked away from before.
She also began to earn some sense of self-preservation, taking sword lessons from Saitou in an attempt to be able to protect herself, but more importantly to protect others. She’s even gone so far as to admit (to herself) that she considers some people friends again, though it’s been ages since she’d made some. While not entirely sure she likes these little changes, she still keeps her goal in mind (that is, to basically survive long enough to see home, and save Miku from the curse or die trying, and then die to be with Yuu again). The desire to keep living that had been starting to creep in is putting some hitches to that plan, but Rei isn’t entirely aware of that yet.
